The daily argument: thermal movement

A slab surface here can swing through thirty degrees between a winter dawn and that same afternoon. Concrete expands and contracts with every cycle, and any rigid coating on top — old bitumen paint, cement slurry, aged torch-on — cracks along with it. Water enters the crack, travels along the slab's reinforcing steel, and drips somewhere completely different inside the house. That is why the ceiling stain is so often nowhere near the actual entry point, and why chasing the stain with patches never ends.

Ponding finishes the job

Most older slabs have settled low spots where stormwater stands for days. Standing water accelerates coating breakdown and probes every weakness continuously. If you can see waterlines or dark rings on your slab a week after rain, the membrane there is living on borrowed time.

The permanent fix: a reinforced flexible system
